Considering, selection and evaluating AT devices
There are many things you want to consider when choosing assistive technology devices and services. First, you should ask yourself what does my student need help doing independently or with assistance? Here are some areas to consider when brainstorming the needs of your student:
-What are their current functional capabilities?
-What kinds of tasks is he/she required to do in daily life?
-Are there any setting specific demands being placed on this individual?
-Are there any person-specific characteristics of this individual?
You may also want to consider the following:
-How easy is it for the individual to use this device?
-How much and what type of training will be necessary to use this device?
-What type of servicing will this device need, and how much will it cost?
-How much does this device cost?
You student's teacher or caseworker should be able to help select the device with you. There are several different of evaluative processes, like surveys or observations, to help select the device that will best promote the independence of your student.
