As a special education teacher it is my job to create the least restrictive environment for every individual in my classroom. Assistive technology is one way to help achieve that least restrictive environment for many students. Assistive technology can be anything from a hearing aid, for students who are hearing impaired, to a walker, for students who are orthopedically impaired.
PL 108-446, better known as the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (2004) states that Assistive technology is made up of two parts: devices and services. Devices are probably what comes to mind when you hear the term "assistive technology." Assistive technology devices are any type of equipment designed to increase the functionality of an individual with disabilities. These devices are separated into three subcategories: low-tech, mid-tech, and high-tech. Examples of these categories can be seen in the examples tab. Assistive technology services are any services designed to help an individual with disabilities attain and use devices. This can include evaluations to choose proper device, repairing device, training on how to use the device, and coordinating services to ensure device is being used in classrooms and/or therapies.
As you can see, assistive technology covers a wide array of functionality devices and services that help individuals with disabilities perform better in and out of the classroom. If you have any questions please visit the contacts page, where you will find my personal email.
